I wonder if the Voltron creative staff had that famous line from Rocky IV on their minds while creating these episodes ’cause boy, my emotions are SHATTERED. This season is not for the faint of heart. It will take you on a roller coaster ride of feels that will leave you breathless, delighted, heart broken, and will annihilate every feeling in your body. No character escapes this season without a moment that will leave you clutching your heart for fear it might slip out of your body. If you like Pidge? Get ready to feel. Hunk? Get ready to cheer. Coran? You will think he is the most gorgeous man. Lance? Bring some buckets cause the tears will flow. Allura? You aren’t even ready. Shiro? Well, that’d be a spoiler wouldn’t it? Hunk thankfully gets a much larger chunk of focus this season. The first episode largely revolves around him and there isn’t a single food reference. Thank goodness. I love Hunk’s food gags as much as anyone but here he’s got a vital part to play in the growing Galra-Voltron alliance. He also gets a ton of moments to be a genius engineer this season, which are much appreciated. Thankfully, unlike season five, the story never feels like its in danger of careening off the tracks. It’s never overstuffed. In fact it feels like Voltron is back in top form after a few seasons of stumbling thanks to the forced reintroduction of Shiro. This series is firing on all cylinders again. The characters relationships are also given strong prominence throughout, especially the friendships. We see just how much this team has bonded and what they mean to each other. A lot of that will contribute to the crying, I assure you. The animation is beyond spectacular, especially in the back half of the season. I guess the creative team just didn’t sleep for a year or three because many sequences look better than blockbuster movies. The action especially is on top form, both in the ground fights and the giant robot battles. Voltron proves once again it’s the best show on TV. Not just animation, TV in general. The writing sets up the plate for every single level of production to knock it absolutely out of the park. This is a team at the top of their game and we are blessed to have their work to enjoy. And to have our hearts broken by them in every single episode. You broke me, Voltron team. And I salute you for it. Shamus Kelley is a pop culture/television writer and official Power Rangers expert.
